Step one: compress the grid into sentences
Most of the chart collapses into rules you can say out loud:
- Hard 11 or less: always hit. Hard 17 or more: always stand.
- Stiffs (12-16) sit against a weak dealer (2-6), hit against a strong one (7-A). The single sentence that fills the biggest region of the chart.
- Double 11 against everything but an ace, 10 against 2-9, 9 against 3-6. The doubling staircase.
- Soft 17 or less: always take a card. Soft 19 plus: stand. Soft 18 is the one that thinks.
- Always split aces and 8s. Never split 10s and 5s. The other pairs lean on the weak-dealer rule.

Step two: isolate the true exception list
What remains after compression is genuinely short, a dozen-odd plays that the sentences get wrong:
- Hit 12 against a 2 or 3 (the stiff rule's famous leak).
- Soft 18's split personality: double against 3-6, stand against 2, 7 and 8, hit against 9, 10 and ace.
- The soft doubling ladder (ace-2 through ace-7 against the weak cards).
- 9-9: split against 2-6 and 8-9, but stand against a 7.
- The handful of surrender cells where the table offers it.
Write your own list; the act of extracting it is half the learning. This division of labor, patterns generate the grid, exceptions get explicit attention, is the entire trick, and it is why the job takes weeks rather than months.
Step three: drill retrieval, not recognition
Here is where most self-teaching fails. Re-reading the chart feels productive and builds only recognition: the warm sense of "yes, I knew that" when you see the answer. A table demands recall: producing the action from two cards and an upcard with nothing to glance at. Practically, that means dealt-hand drills: get a situation, commit, see the correct play immediately with the reason attached. Step four: let your errors write the curriculum
After a few hundred drilled hands, your misses stop being random and become a fingerprint: nearly everyone's clusters in the same neighborhoods (soft 18, the 12-versus-3 exception, pairs, which are too rare to learn from natural dealing volume). This is where statistics turn practice from rehearsal into targeting. An accuracy heat map by hand type and dealer upcard shows the fingerprint; a weakness drill that deals disproportionately from your worst cells erases it. Measure, target, re-measure: the loop compresses the long tail of the chart into days.
A realistic two-week shape
Days 1-3: the five compression sentences, drilled on random hands, chart open nearby as a safety net. Days 4-7: chart closed; add your exception list as its own short drill each day. Week two: random drilling plus daily weakness-drill passes on whatever the stats flag, with pairs and soft hands getting deliberate volume.
