Ask working counters what actually goes wrong at a table and few say "I forgot whether a 5 is plus one." The errors live in the overhead: estimating decks remaining from a discard tray, dividing a running count under noise, doing both while holding a conversation. The Knock-Out count, KO to everyone, is the system built on a blunt question: what if that overhead simply did not exist?

Its answer costs one deliberate imperfection, and the trade has made KO the second system most counters ever learn.

KO is the Hi-Lo count with the 7 promoted from neutral to +1. That is the entire mechanical difference, and everything interesting about the system flows from it. With twenty-one positive tags against twenty negative ones, a full deck no longer sums to zero; it sums to +4. KO is unbalanced on purpose.

Why imbalance replaces arithmetic

Recall the problem the true count solves, from our running count guide: a raw surplus of high cards means little spread across five decks and a lot concentrated in one, so balanced counts divide by decks remaining to measure concentration. That division, plus the deck estimation feeding it, is the overhead.

KO's drift does the adjustment implicitly. Because each dealt deck contributes +4 on average, the running count climbs as the shoe empties, and the same surplus of high cards therefore shows a higher number late in the shoe than early, which is precisely the direction the true count conversion pushes. Start the count at the right negative number and the drift is calibrated: the thresholds that matter arrive at fixed running count values no matter how deep you are. The standard initial running count from the Knock-Out book is 4 minus 4 times the decks: 0 for a single deck, -4 for double deck, -20 for six decks, -28 for eight. From there you count, and only count: no tray reading, no division, ever.

Betting then keys off fixed running numbers. The book's famous "key count" marks where the player's edge roughly begins and bets ramp up, with the values depending on deck count; verify the specific numbers against the published text when you study the system seriously, but the shape is always the same: one memorized threshold instead of a live calculation.

What the simplicity costs

The drift is an approximation, and approximations have edges. KO's implicit adjustment tracks the average depletion of a shoe, not the actual one, so its concentration estimate is slightly noisier than a cleanly divided true count; the imprecision shows most in fine-grained play deviations, which is why KO players typically run a shorter, simpler deviation list than the Illustrious 18 crowd. Counting the 7 also makes the tags fractionally less correlated with the cards that drive betting advantage, another sliver of theoretical loss.

Published comparisons put the total gap between well-played KO and well-played Hi-Lo as small, and execution routinely swamps it: an unbalanced count kept flawlessly beats a balanced count divided wrong. That is the honest frame for choosing. Hi-Lo is the standard with the deepest literature; KO is the system you can hold together on a loud night with the least working memory. Serious players pick based on which of their own errors they would rather eliminate.

Practicing KO

Drill the tags until single cards are instant, giving the 7 special attention, since your brain will import the Hi-Lo habit of ignoring it if you let it. Build speed on multi-card groups. Then practice the full shoe from the correct initial count, and notice the psychological quirk: you will spend most of the shoe in negative numbers, which feels wrong the first dozen times and means nothing at all. The number that matters is distance to your memorized thresholds, not the sign.

As with every system, none of this needs money, a casino, or anything beyond a deck of cards or a trainer that deals fast and checks your count continuously. KO's entire pitch is fewer moving parts between you and accuracy; a good drill is where you find out how much that pitch is worth in your own hands.
