Card counting has the worst public relations of any math skill. Movies present it as either photographic memory or crime. It is neither. A counter does not memorize cards, and counting in your head is entirely legal. What a counter does is track one number, add one or subtract one at a time, and let that number say when the shoe has quietly tilted in the player's favor.
This article explains the mechanism honestly: why the tilt exists, how the Hi-Lo count measures it, what counters actually do with the information, and the limits that the movies leave out.
Why a rich shoe favors the player
Blackjack is nearly unique among casino games: the odds change as cards leave the shoe. Every card dealt changes the composition of what remains, and the two sides of the table are not affected equally.
A shoe rich in tens and aces helps the player three ways. Blackjacks come more often, and a blackjack pays the player 3:2 while the dealer's blackjack only takes your bet. Double downs land better, because the card you hope to draw on an 11 is a ten. And the dealer busts more, because the dealer has no choices: forced to hit every stiff hand, the dealer draws those plentiful tens into 22. A shoe rich in small cards runs the same logic in reverse, feeding the dealer safe draws.
None of this requires knowing which card comes next. It is enough to know which way the remaining shoe leans. That is all a count is: a running estimate of the lean.
The Hi-Lo count
Hi-Lo, the system most counters learn first, assigns every card one of three tags:

You start at zero when the shoe is shuffled and add the tag of every card you see, yours, other players', the dealer's. That total is the running count. A positive count means more small cards have left than big ones, so the remaining shoe is rich in tens and aces: good for you. The tags balance to zero across a full deck, which is what makes Hi-Lo a balanced count.
The skill is not arithmetic, it is speed. Adding one or subtracting one is easy at your kitchen table and hard mid-conversation while a fast dealer clears a full table. That gap is exactly what drills exist to close.
Running count to true count
A running count of +6 means something very different with five decks left than with one. Six extra high cards spread across five decks is a faint signal; concentrated in a single deck, it is a loud one. So multi-deck counters normalize: divide the running count by the estimated number of decks remaining. The result is the true count, the number that actually drives decisions.
Estimating decks remaining sounds harder than it is; counters learn to read the discard tray in half-deck steps, and the estimate only needs to be close. But the conversion is a genuine second skill on top of keeping the count, which is why it gets its own drill in any serious training plan.
What counters do with the count
The count changes two things: how much a counter bets, and a handful of plays.
Bets are the main event. The counter's edge exists only at high true counts, so the strategy is to bet small (or sit out) when the count is neutral or negative and scale up as it rises. The pattern of minimum to maximum bet is called a bet spread, and it is the engine of the whole enterprise: without varying bets, counting mostly tells you how you are losing.
The second lever is deviations, also called index plays: situations where a high or low count overrides basic strategy. The most famous is insurance, a side bet that basic strategy always refuses but that becomes profitable when the true count reaches about +3 in Hi-Lo, per the commonly published indices. The honest reality
Everything above is real, and so are the caveats. Counting in your head is legal in the United States: it is thinking about public information. But casinos are private businesses, and most jurisdictions allow them to refuse service, flatten your bets, or ban you if they suspect counting. Using any device to count is a separate matter and a crime in some jurisdictions, Nevada included. Skilled counters get backed off; it is a routine cost of the pursuit, not a scandal.
The edge itself is thin. Under favorable rules, commonly published estimates put a skilled counter's advantage on the order of half a percent to one and a half percent. That edge pays off only across long play, through swings brutal enough that perfect counters have losing weeks. Counting is a slow statistical harvest with real variance, not a way to win tonight, and anyone selling it as reliable income is selling something else. The modern shoe also has a hard counter-measure: house edge aside, a continuous shuffling machine returns discards constantly, keeps the shoe near neutral, and makes counting pointless at that table.
The field's origin is worth a footnote of respect: Edward O. Thorp, a mathematician, published the first practical counting system in his 1962 book Beat the Dealer, and every system since is a refinement of that idea.
How to practice, from zero
The learning path that works looks like this: be automatic at basic strategy first, because deviations only make sense as exceptions to a strategy you already own. Then learn the tags until single cards are instant. Then build speed with multi-card groups, the way real hands arrive. Then add true count conversion, then bet spreads, then the first deviations.
