Blackjack attracts more probability folklore than any game in the casino: hot tables, third-base players who "take the dealer's bust card", shoes that owe you a win. The folklore thrives because the real numbers are rarely laid out plainly. So here they are: the handful of probabilities that actually describe the game, followed by the myths they quietly demolish.

The numbers that matter

All figures below are the commonly published values for typical multi-deck games; exact decimals shift slightly with the rules.

  • A natural blackjack arrives about once every 21 hands, roughly 4.8 percent. Rare enough to feel special, frequent enough that its 3:2 payout carries real weight in the game's math.
  • The dealer busts a bit under three hands in ten overall. Useful, but the per-upcard spread is the number that plays: roughly four in ten against a 5 or 6, sliding to under two in ten against an ace.
  • Hitting a hard 16 busts about six times in ten. Hitting a 12, only about three in ten: just four ranks (10, J, Q, K) break it.
  • Ten-value cards are 4 of every 13 ranks. Not "the next card is probably a ten", a myth in its own right, but the densest single value in the deck, which is why assuming ten-ness is a decent tiebreaker in close spots.

Why these numbers run the whole game

Put the dealer's bust spread next to your own bust risks and basic strategy stops looking like a table of arbitrary commandments. Against a 5 or 6, the dealer is one forced draw from disaster four times in ten; your stiff 14 gains nothing by risking its own bust, so you stand, double your 10s and 11s, and split more pairs. Against a 9, 10 or ace, the dealer's likeliest ending is a made 19 or 20; your 14 loses by standing almost as surely as by busting, so you hit and take the better of two bad gambles.

Every cell in the chart is this same calculation with the exact numbers filled in. That is the honest meaning of "playing the odds": not intuition, arithmetic done once by computer and memorized.

The shoe has no memory

The gambler's fallacy is the belief that past results bend future ones: five losses in a row means a win is "due". It is false in blackjack for a simple reason: outcomes are not a thing the shoe tracks. Under a fresh shuffle, every round faces the same composition and the same probabilities, no matter what just happened. A "hot table" is a description of the last hour, with zero forecasting power for the next hand.

The same logic sinks progression betting systems, the Martingales and their cousins. Raising bets after losses rearranges when the money moves, sometimes thrillingly, but the expectation of every single bet remains the same slightly negative number, and no sequencing of negative-expectation bets sums to a positive one. The house edge is indifferent to the order you bet in.

One precision, because it is where the folklore steals a real idea: within an unshuffled shoe, composition genuinely does drift as cards leave, and tracking that drift is exactly what card counting is. But the drift counters track is in the cards remaining, never in wins and losses, and it vanishes the moment the shuffle comes.

Other players cannot hurt your odds

The most persistent table myth is that a bad player at third base "takes the dealer's bust card" and ruins the shoe for everyone. In any single hand, their draw can indeed change what the dealer receives, in either direction. What the myth misses is symmetry: the card they take is as likely to help you as hurt you, and across many hands the effect nets to exactly zero. Their play affects the story of a hand, never the odds of the game. The only person whose decisions change your expectation is you.

Where the real odds live

Strip the myths away and three levers remain. The rules of the table you sit at: payout line, S17 or H17, deck count, each worth a measurable slice of edge. The accuracy of your strategy: casual mistakes cost whole percentage points, and drilling them away is the cheapest improvement in the game. And for the committed few, counting, with its small honest edge and large honest variance.

Everything on that short list is learnable, and none of it requires wagering anything: the entire point of practicing with virtual chips, as our practice guide lays out, is that the math works identically whether the chips are real or not. The odds do not care. That is the most useful thing about them.
