Every card in the deck moves the odds a different amount when it leaves the shoe. A five leaving helps you more than a two; a ten leaving hurts more than a nine. Level-one systems like Hi-Lo deliberately flatten those differences into plus one, zero and minus one, buying speed with a little blur. Omega II, published by Bryce Carlson in Blackjack for Blood, is the classic system that refuses the blur: it weights cards on two levels, tracking the shoe's true tilt more faithfully at the price of heavier arithmetic.

The shape follows the math of card removal. The middle small cards, 4 through 6, are the dealer's best rescue cards on stiff hands, so their departure helps the player most: they earn the +2. Tens dominate the player's blackjacks and doubles, so their departure costs the most: -2. The mild cards get ones, the 9 a gentle minus, and the count is balanced: a full deck sums to zero, so the true count conversion works exactly as in Hi-Lo.

Notice the ace sitting at zero. That is not an oversight; it is the system's most distinctive design decision.

The ace side count

The ace is the deck's double agent. For betting purposes it is the most valuable card there is, the raw material of 3:2 blackjacks. For playing decisions it behaves like a small card: it fills doubles and soft hands the way a five might. Level-one systems average the two roles into a single -1 and accept the compromise. Omega II splits them: the main count ignores aces entirely, keeping the playing signal pure, and a separate side count tracks aces seen against the expected pace of roughly one per quarter deck. Bets then adjust for ace richness on top of the main count.

This is the honest cost of the system stated plainly: you are keeping two counts at once. It is also the honest source of much of its power, because the published betting correlation of Omega II with the side count is excellent, and blackjack frequency is exactly what high-count betting is trying to capture.

Two-level tags mean real additions, sixes and tens moving the count by twos while sevens move it by ones, sustained through a fast table with a side count running underneath.
